Earl Thomas’ gospel rebirth

Earl Thomas retired from music in late 2019 — or so he thought. The award-winning San Diego blues soul singer and songwriter had toured the world multiple times, released a slew of albums and seen his songs recorded by Etta James, Ike Turner and other earthy American music luminaries. He seemed content to spend his time working as a dental technician in La Jolla.

But an invitation to perform a series of Sunday gospel concerts at Humphreys Backstage Live this year saw the Tennessee native spring back into action. As the leader of Earl Tomas & The Gospel Ambassadors, featuring Sister Leola, his electrifying performances led to an invitation to appear with his band at famed London jazz club Ronnie Scott’s as part of the 2023 London Jazz Festival.

A rousing new album, “Church Songs,” was released this fall, and Thomas’ Nov. 12 London performance was recorded for an upcoming live release. He and his band now have an international booking agent and have already been booked for concerts in Scandinavia next summer.

“I felt like I was phony doing the blues,” Thomas said in a September interview with the Union-Tribune. “Now that I’m doing gospel, I feel completely legit. This is where I live.”

Saxophonist Elan Trotman, has quickly become one of jazz’s most thrilling and emotive performers as he continues to stand out and push boundaries as a composer, performer, teacher and recording artist. Trotman’s playing, though inspired by Grover Washington, Jr., Kirk Whalum and Najee, displays his own fresh ideas and distinctive tone. So much so that the New England Urban Music Awards, and The Barbados Music Awards both named him Jazz Artist of The Year on multiple occasions.

Darci is blessed with a powerhouse of a voice and an infectious stage presence. She radiates fun and will absorb you with the versatility of her voice. George masters the guitar with tasty licks and spot on guitar tone. Bruce’s keys bring great depth and versatility to the sound of the band. He always has two hands on two different keyboards, with the perfect patch applied. People always marvel at Michael’s drum set. Then, they hear him play and are even more impressed! The guy has some fast hands! Complimenting Michael’s drumming is Frank on Bass. He’s usually smiling and captivated by the groove.

Detroit Underground

July 20 @ 8:00 pm
Genre: Dance
$15 cover

The Detroit Underground  was established in 1994, and still has several of its original members. Over the years the band has earned the reputation for being a hard working, high energy, show band. The group features a very solid and funky rhythm section. These four seasoned players provide a solid foundation for the band’s “smokin” horns.

Topping it off are California’s best male and female lead vocalists. These two high-powered singers will light up the stage, and leave you singing their songs long after you leave the show.

This powerful combination of dedicated musicians gives the band the ability to crank out tunes from artists such as EARTH, WIND, and FIRE, CHAKA KAHN,and STEVIE WONDER. We also play great motown hits and heart-felt ballads.

The Detroit Underground is not just another nightclub act, but a complete musical experience
